COMMUNITY NEWS
Ski Resort News
At Tuesday’s Zoom Community Forum, Tim Smith discussed the recent lift incidents at Attitash, Cannon and Pat’s Peak, and the gearbox failure at Gunstock during President’s Week. These incidents hit the news hard across the U.S. Tim put this into perspective, there are over 2.1 million skier visits per year in New Hampshire averaging 16 runs per visit. So, if you do the math on that it’s 32 million lift rides per year. Mechanical issues happen from time to time. In New Hampshire there are around 30 incidents per year, from mechanical failure to lift evacs, and we never hear about most of them. That’s a very low number of incidents considering the millions of people served. Riding a ski lift is still one of the safest modes of transit available. Tim also discussed a couple of mechanical issues the mountain has been dealing with caused by a power outage due to water dripping inside a sectionalizer cabinet which is where you split off your main power lines. The outage affected the Tecumseh and Green Peak lifts. Electricians fixed the problem, and they were able to get the Tecumseh lift back up. Although the power is back on, the Green Peak lift does not have the protections that the Tecumseh lift has. So, at the time of the forum, they were continuing to work on the Green Peak drive.
Get the mountain and town news from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, by participating in the Zoom Community Forum every other Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Email tsmith@waterville.com to be added to the group.

DHMC HVC CARES stands for Heart & Vascular Center: Community Awareness Research and Education Saves Lives. HVC CARES is a community outreach program that travels to various areas across VT and NH to perform cardiac screenings to members of the community. The screenings are completely free of cost and include screening for blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. The HVC CARES group consists of mainly registered nurses, as well as advanced practice registered nurses, and one staff physician.
Brief overview of the screening process:
Blood is collected using a small lancet to poke the finger
A very small sample of blood is collected into a pipette to perform the test
The blood is then transferred to two testing strips into HVC CARES portable machines
Once inserted into the machine, they will have results within 2-3 minutes
Screening takes less than 5 minutes in total, and HVC CARES offers educational resources to all of those screened

Irish Dance Competition
The Waterville Valley Feis (pronounced FESH) aka Irish Dance Competition returns to Waterville Valley this spring - Friday-Sunday, May 2-4, at the Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
This is an independent group and does not go through group sales and they are on their own for lodging.
Here are the details as I know them:
2025 is the fourth year Waterville Valley has hosted the Feis.
Last year there were about 325 dancers plus parent/chaperone.
The group is on their own for meals, although some picnic. Last year NextLevel Food Truck was in Town Square all three days. I don't know if that's happening this year. The event organizer hopes that Town Square restaurants will be open and prepared to serve the group.
Dance competition starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 3-4 p.m. each day.
Spectators are welcome at no charge.
Peggy Woods Doherty is the event organizer and can be reached via email at woods.doherty@gmail.com
