Ski Resort News - From Tuesday's Community Forum

I encourage you to participate in the Tuesday biweekly community forums via Zoom! Anyone can participate (you don’t have to show your lovely face or even talk, just listen if you prefer). Tim Smith leads the discussion with a review of all Waterville Valley Resort news, and other community stakeholders are invited to chime in with their news. Email tsmith@waterville.com to be added to the Zoom invitation. If you ever have questions or comments (like I often see on the Waterville Valley News & Views Facebook page), feel free to shoot Tim an email, or message him during the Zoom meeting. He’s very responsive.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Tim discussed the Moguls World Cup. This is the second year Waterville Valley hosted the event, and he gave credit to all who helped make it a great success. Everyone’s efforts, from employees to terrific volunteerism and community spirit, are a huge reason why a mid-sized mountain like Waterville Valley is selected to host a world-class event of this level. Tim talked about how the moguls course was created by Prinoth using innovative technology, the success of Granite Outdoor Alliance’s Rock City vendor village, how they need more fire pits next time (for ambiance and warmth!), and how well received the kids’ slides were (and they now realize that a play area would be an important element at future events like this). Tim said Waterville Valley would like to host this event again next year. However, there’s another resort bidding on it and there are some political issues. Tim reported that we should find out if Waterville Valley gets the bid in the next couple of weeks. Next year’s event will be early, prior to MLK day, due to the Olympics.

Tim addressed the questions and comments about why Sunnyside Timberlodge was open for the World Cup but otherwise hasn’t been open since the pandemic. When the pandemic struck, Sunnyside was closed due to its inefficiencies. The Resort decided to open it for this year’s World Cup events as a VIP space and for general admissions and bathrooms. To open for World Cup, they had to replumb it and make some modifications to the heating system. While it was a big hit during the World Cup (and much better than last year’s tents), it was costly to operate even for such a short amount of time. In the 14 days the building was open, it burned through 1200 gallons of heating fuel. The bottom line, there is still much to do at Sunnyside Timberlodge to make it a sustainable venue.

Tim said the Resort team is well aware that the lift bubbles are breaking. They now recognize that the plastic is weak and there have been issues with vandalism. The Resort is working proactively to find a solution and create a better bubble. You can see a prototype of a new bubble on chair #66. Tim believes this bubble material and design will hold up to our conditions better and will be harder to vandalize.

Uphilling is awesome and Waterville Valley has one of the best programs with Uphill New England. However, mountain staff have noticed there have been ‘midnight marauders’ uphilling at night. Staff have been finding tracks over winch cables, which is very dangerous and disconcerting. There is a lot of equipment and employees operating on the mountain at night, from winch cats to snowcats and snowmobiles. Staff using the equipment are not anticipating or prepared to come across people on the mountain. If you know people going up the mountain at night, please encourage them not to do so – for their safety and for the sake of the mountain team working on the mountain.

You can find Waterville’s Uphill Access Policy at https://www.waterville.com/uphill.

Uphill access is limited to the following routes and hours:
